I was able to attend 3 Mass Comm week panels this past week. The first one I attended was a talk by author Domingo Martinez surrounding his memoir “The Boy Kings of Texas” and the importance of staying in college. I thought his speech was really relatable and down to earth. I appreciated his honesty about the publishing world, staying true to himself, and the reasoning behind his decision to break away from the traditional Hispanic narrative.

That same day I attended a grad school information panel. There were six current mass comm grad students who shared their experiences transitioning from undergrad to grad school. It was interesting to hear their perspectives and I learned that unlike my prior thinking, teaching at the undergrad level is not a requirement for grad school.

Lastly I attended a talk by National Geographic editor David Brindley. It was amazing learning about the ins and outs of NatGeo magazine and all of their other entities. Hearing how NatGeo was able to keep their sense of identity while still transitioning with the ever-changing media climate was fascinating, Brindley was so kind and his enthusiasm and passion for his career was definitely evident.

It was a bit sad considering this is going to be my last Mass Comm week at Texas State but I saw some great speakers and it was well worth it.
