Oddly enough, my favorite event from Mass Comm Week wasn’t directly about an area of mass communication. It was Chris Perez’s talk on how to start a business that will affect change in the world around you aptly called Entrepreneurial thinking: Habits you need to unlock your career and change the world.
Chris started his career in engineering and never thought he would start his own business. Many years later he now runs a successful organization called Left/Right Media, which publishes the current #1 magazine and city guide app in Austin called Citygram Austin. I really enjoyed how he connected his background to the members of the audience. As college students, and has humans, we don’t always know what we want to do with our lives, but Chris reassured the 400+ students that it was okay to not know and to just start in a job that they’re comfortable with. “Doing a job that is comfortable helps give you time to think of what your dreams are. Don’t worry if you don’t start your dream job,” Perez said. This was one of many of the inspirational things he said.
Perez really focused on connecting to us as millennials. He explained that millennials look to change the world by desiring jobs that drive us to better things and by doing a little bit of everything. He talked about the confidence of our that motivates our generation to take a multitude of selfies, and he connected it to the necessary characteristics of entrepreneurs.
As a millennial who wants to change the world, I absolutely love this session and was inspired to one day begin a nonprofit organization. While I could write so many more words about this amazing talk, I will leave you with a quote that summarizes well what Chris Perez wanted to teach.
Keep learning, my friends.
