I got to experience mass comm week for the first time last year, but this year was definitely an experience to remember. I know as a student it often gets overwhelming to feel like you don’t know what you want to do after you graduate, or what kind of career you want to get into, so having professionals come and speak about their journeys and experiences is really motivating.
The first panel I attended was Digital Media: A tech tour. Three panelists from Just Media, Inc Austin spoke about different tactics media professionals use to target different outlets and trends. I’m a big tech junky so I was really interested in what this company had to say about their marketing strategies and their relationship with Google.
I also attended Storytelling Across all Platforms with David Goins from WFAA. I really enjoyed learning about his journey in the news industry and how storytelling develops in the news room.
My favorite panel that I attended however was definitely National Geographic’s managing editor, David Brindley, who spoke on Nat Geo’s storytelling transition from print to social media. It was so interesting to learn how this successful company took it’s well-known ability to capture and tell a story and transfer it to digital media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and even Snapchat. It’s inspiring to see how National Geographic has evolved and how they have a great team of professionals behind their success. I took a lot away from this panel including a small interview with David Goins and a selfie. 🙂
Good lord!! I wonder how long it took him to get all the way to National Geographic? That’s amazing! I really wish that I hadn’t missed that one.
