Hey guys! My name is Alexis De La Garza, and I’m a 20-year-old junior public relations major with an economics minor, although I’m considering either changing that or adding a second minor in something like social work or child development.
I’m sort of a huge nerd. I love comic books and super heroes, Zelda games, Mario Kart and pretty much most things from Nintendo. My favorite super heroes include Nightwing, Batgirl (the Cassandra Cain version), Ms. Marvel (the Kamala Khan version), Captain America, Wonder Woman and Robin (the Damian Wayne version). I prefer DC to Marvel most of the time if we’re ignoring the New52 (which I do 100 percent of the time). I spend probably too much money on Comixology subscriptions for those books.
I also like hiking and skiing, and my favorite sport to watch is gymnastics. I was never a gymnast, but the sport has fascinated me since I was about 10, and I’ve been following it since then. One of my favorite websites for gymnastics is The Gymternet, which has covered pretty much every competition ever, and the young woman who runs it is incredibly nice.
I grew up in Schertz, which is about 30 minutes south of San Marcos, but I currently live in San Antonio. I was editor of my high school’s newspaper, which is pretty much how I ended up wanting to come here. My high school newspaper adviser graduated from here when it was still Southwest Texas State, and she was a pretty big influence on me growing up. Once I visited the campus, I was pretty much sold on attending Texas State, and I’ve loved it here since day one.
I’m currently a resident assistant in Chautauqua Hall on campus, and it’s pretty much the best job I’ve ever
held. I’m a huge people person, and I like to help people, so being an RA is pretty much the perfect gig for me. While I’m not quite as creative as some of my fellow RAs, I still love what I do, and I wouldn’t give it up for the world.
Once I graduate, I’d love to work for a nonprofit group like a women’s center or something with children. I’ve been working with kids since I was 13 or 14 in babysitting jobs or nannying, and I really enjoy it, so that’s something I’d like to continue with my career. Also, if I can use my career to help people, I’d love it even more. Sometimes I think I really should’ve gone to college to become a teacher, but at this point it’s a little late for that since I only have 30 hours left.
At home, I have a little brother who is currently a senior in high school. He’s not sure what he wants to do yet, but I’m working on convincing him to come here. I also have a Chihuahua named Lucy, and she’s sort of a terror, but I love her anyway. I’ve had her since I was about 13, and I spoiled her rotten, so her being a little brat is probably my fault.
I decided to take this class because I believe coding is a very valuable skill today, and it’s a skill I’d like to have. I know this class is only a semester and that I couldn’t possibly learn everything about coding in a few months, but I fully expect to come away with valuable knowledge and insight in HTML and CSS by the end of the semester.
Oh my gosh! You’re from Schertz? I’m from Cibolo! What’s it like being a Resident Assistant?
Wow, small world! Did you go to Steele? I graduated from Clemens!
And being an RA is pretty fun. It’s a great community, especially among my hall’s staff. So far I’ve yet to meet anyone who isn’t cheerful and open-minded.
It really is and yep, I graduated from Steele Class of 2012! And that’s great that everyone is friendly to each other. I considered being an RA in the past, but I wimped out. I didn’t think I could handle that much responsibility.
